Student raises awareness through diabetes awareness

Nicholas Workman, 14, a Springfield Local student, was diagnosed with diabetes at 12, but two years later he’s helping others and spreading awareness about the disease.

Nicholas started the 3-mile Diabetes Awareness Walk at Springfield. He also is the Youth Red Strider Ambassador for the Step-Out Walk in Canfield.

The 3-mile walk will take place from 9:30 a.m. to noon Thursday at the Springfield Local High School Stadium. All students in grades five through eight and staff will be participating in the walk with a $3 donation.

Students and staff also raised money selling T-shirts and bracelets, along with a raffle for a cornhole board at a local coffee shop, Groggy Monday. All proceeds will be donated to the American Diabetes Association to help find a cure for diabetes.

The Springfield Walk precedes the American Diabetes Association walk at the Canfield Fairgrounds on Sunday.
