Local chamber opposes Ohio bill to eliminate Common Core ed standards
YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber Board of Directors voted earlier this month to oppose Ohio House Bill 597, which would eliminate the Common Core learning standards in the state’s public schools.
The New Learning Standards/Common Core place greater emphasis on reading, writing, critical thinking, problem-solving and depth of knowledge than Ohio’s current standards, which focus more heavily on memorization. Common Core aligns Ohio with more than 40 states that have adopted the New Learning Standards.
The Ohio Board of Education adopted Common Core in 2010.
