Brewer, Miller latest to join Hall of Fame

Beatrice Brewer and Sandy Miller were inducted into the Youngstown-Salem USBC Women’s Bowling Association Hall of Fame on Oct. 5.

Brewer, Miller and Norma Diver — the Secretary of the Year — were honored during the organization’s 38th annual Hall of Fame Induction, which took place at Lucianno’s Cafe & Banquet Center.

Brewer was inducted as a star of yesteryear by the organization. She is a 36-year member of the Youngstown Women’s Bowling Association. Her high average was 202 and high series was 752. She twice rolled games of 299. Brewer bowled in the YWBA City Tournament 28 times and in the Ohio Women’s Bowling Association State Tournament on 16 occasions.

Brewer was the 1981-82 YWBA City Tournament Actual Doubles champion with Debra Dukes. In 1990-91, she was the YWBA Singles Actual champion and All-Events Actual champion. In 1993-94, she earned second place in Division I with a 752 series and 188 game average. She also finished in the YWBA’s top 10 for averages on multiple occasions.

Brewer was a YWBA board member from 1995-98. She also coaches Classic Junior bowlers for 14 years and helped to raise $10,000 for junior bowlers to travel out of state for competition. She is affiliated with the John Bossone Memorial Tournament at Amron Lanes and is a past secretary and treasurer in the Swan’s Mixed, Amron’s Sassy Classy and Friday Nighters leagues.

Miller was inducted for meritorious service. She is a 52-year member of the YWBA with a high average of 181 and high series of 650. Her high game is 287. She bowled in 30 YWBA City Tournaments and 15 OWBA State Tournaments. Miller was association manager of the Youngstown-Salem USBC WBA for six years and director of the Youngstown-Salem USBC WBA for two years.

Miller was the 2007 YWBA Secretary of the Year in 2007 and has been secretary-treasurer of the Youngstown Women’s 500 Club since 1990. She is a 40-year original member of the Ladies Variety League and held the offices of president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer during her bowling career.

Miller won the Division D category in the Seniors Tournament in 1999. She was a girls slow-pitch softball coach and manager in Struthers for six years. She was a certified umpire in leagues in Campbell and Struthers for 15 years. Miller was a Campbell City Schools bus driver for 41 years.

Miller is the daughter of Helen Klingler, who was inducted into the YWBA Hall of Fame in 1981.

Diver has been the secretary of the Steel City Senior Ladies for 17 years, the Stachowski Farm Trio for 10 years and the Alley Cats for seven years, all at Amron Lanes.
