Seven charged in high school football hazing
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J.
Prosecutors say seven students have been charged as part of an investigation into hazing on a New Jersey high school football team.
Middlesex County prosecutor Andrew C. Carey said Friday night three of the students are charged with aggravated sexual assault, criminal restraint and other crimes. He says the four others are charged with aggravated criminal sexual contact and other crimes for what happened at Sayreville War Memorial High School.
The students range in age from 15 to 17. Prosecutors say six of the seven were arrested Friday night. The seventh is being sought. Football games have been canceled.
Harris’ attorney says complaint withdrawn
GAINESVILLE, Fla.
The University of Florida says that the sexual battery complaint against quarterback Treon Harris has been withdrawn.
Harris’ attorney Huntley Johnson says “I am pleased for Treon Harris and his family. I am not going to speculate on what the university will do next.”
University spokesperson Janine Sikes says in a statement that the school will “have more information on his football status later in the day.”
Harris, a freshman from Miami, was banned from team activities Monday while authorities investigate the allegations made against him. The school said Harris was accused of sexually assaulting a female student around 3 a.m. Sunday — hours after he helped Florida rally to beat Tennessee 10-9 in Knoxville — at an on-campus residence hall.
Harris was not arrested or charged with a crime.
UGA hires attorney for suspended RB Gurley
ATHENS, Ga.
Georgia has hired an attorney for star running back Todd Gurley, who is suspended indefinitely while the school investigates an alleged violation of NCAA rules.
Athletic director Greg McGarity issued a statement late Friday afternoon saying the school is working “to resolve the eligibility matter as expeditiously as possible and in a manner that is in the best interests of the university, its coaches, and its student-athletes.” He did not address any specifics of the case.
McGarity says the university will not tolerate any NCAA rules violations, but will also do whatever it can to support its student-athletes. He says Gurley accepted an offer from the school to provide him with an attorney who has vast experience in eligibility matters, as allowed by NCAA rules. The attorney was not identified.
