50th anniversary

The Franciscan Friars will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Shrine of Our Lady, Comforter of the Afflicted, 517 S. Belle Vista Ave., with Mass at 6 p.m. Oct. 21 at the shrine.

Women’s Day

Bishop Bonnie Hines will speak at Women’s Day activities planned at 10:45 a.m. Oct. 19 at Price Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church, 920 Dryden Ave.

Rabbi is speaker

Rabbi Benjamin Blech, professor of the Talmud at Yeshiva University in New York, will speak on “The Sistine Chapel: The Hidden Jewish Messages of Michelangelo” at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 21 at Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center, 2067 Evergreen Road.

The program is sponsored by the Rev. George Balasko for the 80th anniversary of his baptism.

Rabbi Blech’s latest book, which coincided with the 500th anniversary of Michaelangelo’s starting work on the Sistine Chapel, is on the topic of his talk.
