Mahoning humane agents find dead dog, at least one more shot

YOUNGSTOWN

Humane agents are investigating after at least two dogs, and possibly a third, were found shot Thursday afternoon on the East Side.

Police were called to the 2000 block of Woodcrest Avenue about 2:55 p.m. on a report of a lost dog and then called the Mahoning County Dog Warden’s Office when they learned the dog had been shot, said Humane Agent Dave Nelson.

Nelson said there was a dog in a nearby driveway that was dead from a gunshot wound to the head. As he was examining that dog, he was alerted to another dog, a shepherd/huskie mix, that was bleeding from a shoulder wound.

Nelson said he tried to catch that dog to examine it, but the dog eluded him. A neighbor on a nearby street then said there was a third dog, a pit-bull mix, that had been shot. Nelson said he followed blood trails but could find no sign of that dog.

The dog that was killed, an American bulldog mix, was to be buried by its family, Nelson said.

Nelson said witnesses said there was a vehicle in the area, but they gave no further information.

Anyone with information should call 911, Nelson said.
