1913: The Panama Canal is effectively completed as President Woodrow Wilson sends a signal from the White House by telegraph, setting off explosives that destroy a section of the Gamboa dike.
1935: The George Gershwin opera “Porgy and Bess,” featuring an all-black cast, opens on Broadway; it ran for 124 performances.
1938: Nazi Germany completes its annexation of Czechoslovakia’s Sudetenland.

1989: Edward J. DeBartolo of Boardman is listed by Forbes magazine as the nation’s 42nd richest man, with a value of $1.4 billion. William M. Cafaro is 148th with $500 million. DeBartolo and Cafaro develop real estate.
Neil D. Humphrey, president of Youngstown State University, issues a memorandum prohibiting smoking in all university buildings. The board of trustees adopts the anti-smoking policy as part of a new contract with the faculty.
1974: Rosa Kyle, 100, of E. Philadelphia Avenue, and Fannie Greer, 104, of Dundee Avenue, are honored by Youngstown City Council on Senior Citizens Day.
The Trumbull County United Appeal kicks off its fall campaign with a dinner at W.D. Packard Music Hall. The goal is $1.2 million.
1964: The Youngstown District’s steel production continues at 85 percent of capacity. U.S. Steel has 14 open hearths and three blast furnaces in operation.

1939: More than 1,000 people hear Cleveland Bishop James McFadden dedicate St. Stephen’s Cemetery on Warren Avenue in Niles. Pastor Daniel Gallagher says the 6-acre plot was purchased and improved at a cost of $10,000.
More than 3,500 men have been added to the payrolls of three major steel producers in Mahoning County since July 1.
Peter J. Corll, chairman of the Mahoning County Democratic central committee, sends letters to all Youngstown precinct committeemen asking that no endorsement of a mayor candidate be made at a meeting of Democratic ward captains.
