On Sept. 5, Stadium Drive Elementary School participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, with the school’s entire staff participating. The money was donated to Christine Terlesky, the former Boardman High School teacher who has the disease.

“We are always looking for things to do for others - to teach our kids the importance of thinking of other people,” Stadium Drive Elementary Principal Jim Goske said. “Having a parent in our building who we could do the ice bucket challenge for made it a no-brainer.

“All of our staff members did it. [Christine’s children] Emma and Tyler Terlesky had the honor of walking around and dumping the water on each staff member, one at a time. They then dumped the final bucket [garbage can] on me.”

The rules of the challenge are that within 24 hours of being challenged, participants are to video record themselves in continuous footage. They must first record themselves accepting the challenge by filling a bucket with ice and water. The bucket is then lifted up and the contents dumped on their head. The participant can then challenge someone else.

Goske said a final total that was raised wasn’t known yet, but he said the event was a success.

“It was great to have everyone pull together to help to raise awareness of ALS and to pay tribute to Christine Terlesky,” he said. “It was also good for our students to see our staff members being positive role models and setting an example of one way to do something for other people. Also, it was a lot of fun!”

Goske said Stadium Drive Elementary challenged the staffs of West Boulevard, Robinwood Lane and Market Street elementary schools to take the challenge next.
