One of the more popular programs at the Poland library is the Lego My Library event, which allows children to come and build whatever they want out of Legos and the larger Duplos blocks. The program has been done once a month at the library for the past year and a half. The most recent event was on Sept. 16.
“We heard about Lego programs at other libraries that were popular and we wanted to try it,” Poland library assistant supervisor Amanda Kollar said. “As soon as we started doing it, it brought in a lot of the school-age kids, they love Legos. It’s a chance for them to – even if they have Legos at home – come into the library and meet other kids and just have a blast working together to build and a great chance for interaction and socialization.”
The event attracted eight children who dove right in and started building even before the 6 p.m. start time.
“Legos give them a chance to foster, to build,” Kollar said. “Different libraries do it different ways. We usually just let them have a free build, build whatever they want, use their imagination. Working together with the other kids because they have to share the Legos and decide what they’re going to build. Their motor skills, they’re working with some Legos that are very small.”
The projects that the children build are displayed on the library’s shelves for a month before they are taken down and disassembled for the next event.
Kollar said she has seen some very creative projects built in the past.
“All kinds of different things,” she said. “There’s been restaurants that have been built, they really like the different characters. There’s some fairy tale or fantasy scenes, a lot of vehicles, a lot of castles. Just different types of towers or buildings.”
