GIRLS TENNIS

Hannah Cianciola and Ashley Kaleel did it the hard way, but the Canfield doubles team earned a trip to the state tennis tournament with two upset victories on Thursday. The duo knocked off Magnificat’s Lauren O’Malley and Alexandra Vesikallio 6-4, 6-4 in the first round. O’Malley and Vesikallio were the top-seeded duo out of the Oberlin sectional. Cianciola and Kaleel then beat Hudson’s Andra Achim and Grace Graham 6-0, 6-1. Achim and Graham were the third-seeded duo in the Medina sectional. The Canfield girls will play Walsh Jesuit’s Emily Hissong and Paige Carmichael — the Medina sectional’s top-seeded duo — on Saturday in the district semifinal.

BOYS SOCCER

Hoover 2, Boardman 1

BOARDMAN

Hoover scored the game-winning goal with 1:38 remaining to sink Boardman. The Spartans rallied to even the score on a Anthony Pallante goal from Zach Fryda. Brian Fryda had five saves and Kevin Durkin had three for Boardman. JV: Hoover 2-1.

GIRLS SOCCER

Badger 2, Ursuline 0

Kinsman

Holly Masters and Haley Wilson scored for Badger in a win over Ursuline. Masters also assisted on Wilson’s goal. Izabella Armstrong had 12 saves for the Braves (11-3-1, 7-0) and Jordyn Kenneally stopped four shots for the Irish.

Hickory 4, Canfield 3

CANFIELD

Anita Mancini, Bailey Fischer and Sydney Miller scored for Canfield in a losing effort against Hickory. The Cardinals (12-4) had 11 shots on net. Raquel Abel made seven saves for Canfield.

VOLLEYBALL

Mineral Ridge 25-25-25, Lisbon 16-15-22

MINERAL RIDGE

Peyton Allen had 22 kills and 24 digs and Brianna Miner added two kills, 32 assists and 17 digs to lead Mineral Ridge to victory over Lisbon. Anna Bodl added nine kills for the Rams (18-3, 13-1), who earned a share of the ITCL championship with the win. Taylor Sieske had eight kills, three blocks and four digs to lead the Blue Devils. Kimmie Wiggers added 11 kills and 12 digs.

LaBrae 25-25-25, Campbell 17-6-12

LEAVITTSBURG

Mary Horton had 16 points, Miranda Dodrill had 12 kills and Haylie Kiser had 16 kills in LaBrae’s win over Campbell. Allie Middleton had 25 assists for the Vikings (8-14, 4-6). Caity Hall had five points and Tatyana Nelko had 11 digs to lead the Red Devils. JV: LaBrae, 2-0.

Poland 25-25-25, Niles 5-13-14

NILES

Jen Eich had seven aces, 12 assists, two blocks and 22 points for Poland in a straight-set win. Arlia Duarte added eight kills, six aces, four blocks and 12 points for the Bulldogs. Niles was led by Katie Rearic’s eight kills and five points, and Katie Julian’s 10 assists. JV: Poland, 2-0.

Newton Falls 25-25-25, Champion 15-8-10

CHAMPION

Olivia Hedge had 17 points, including four aces, as Newton Falls swept Champion. Gabby Kline had 16 kills and Lindsey Holub added 10 for the Tigers (18-4). Kate Wainwright had 30 assists. Lauren Holt had seven points, three kills and nine digs to lead the Flashes.

Lakeview 25-25-25, Howland 20-13-22

CORTLAND

Whitney Winch had nine kills and five blocks, while Laney Lytle had 17 assists and two aces for Lakeview in a win over Howland. Jensen Silbaugh had 12 digs and Carly Casassa added 11 points for the Bulldogs. For Howland (9-13), Christian Carr had 14 digs, six kills and four aces. Cassie Murcko added 11 kills and two blocks.

Brookfield 25-25-21-22-15, Liberty 19-18-25-25-8

LIBERTY

Delaney Saxton had 27 kills and 24 digs and Katie Bender added 40 assists in Brookfield’s win over Liberty. Madison Bonekovic had 20 digs and Brooke Hiner had 11 points for the Warriors (19-3, 10-0). Raven Watson had nine points and Allie Culler had 23 kills for the Leopards (11-11).

West Branch 25-25-25, Minerva 21-15-13

BELOIT

Pavin Heath had nine points and 26 assists, while Lexington Pittman had nine points and 14 digs to lead West Branch over Minerva. Sydney Townes had 20 kills and Paige Walsh added six blocks for the Warriors (13-9, 9-5). Jordan Diels had four points, six kills, two aces and 16 kills for Minerva (7-15, 3-11). JV: West Branch, 2-0.

Heartland Christian 25-25-25, Youngstown Christian 7-14-10

COLUMBIANA

Kristen Osborn had 19 kills and 10 digs and Ginny Burgess had 12 points, five aces, 28 digs assists and eight digs for the Lions (16-5). Bonnie Flynn contributed 10 points, 12 kills and 12 digs for Heartland Christian. Liv Cheirs led Youngstown Christian with seven kills, Rachel Gallos had 20 assists and Marissa Davis had 16 digs. JV: Heartland Christian, 2-0.

Ursuline 25-27-25-22-17, Leetonia 15-29-19-25-15

LEETONIA

Alena Burzyski 15 points and 42 digs and Miranda Force had six points and 17 kills to help Ursuline get past Leetonia. Katie Conlan added 11 points and 17 assists for the Irish (11-1). Leetonia (7-13) was led by Erica Druszecki, who had 17 points, two aces, 11 kills and 21 digs, and Kristy Eckman, who finished with 12 kills and eight blocks. JV: Leetonia, 2-1.

Bristol 25-25-25, Bloomfield 18-17-12

BLOOMFIELD

Kylie Stoneman had 15 points, seven aces and five digs to lead Bristol past Bloomfield. Olivia Pilon had 12 kills and Ashley Lamosek had 22 assists for the Panthers (14-7, 10-6). Jalene Klatka had five points and an aces, while Marissa Sutton added seven kills and three digs for Bloomfield. JV: Bristol, 2-0.

United 25-25-25, Jackson-Milton 19-15-8

HANOVERTON

Claudia Rockhold had three aces and nine kills, while Logan Daggy had two aces, eight kills and two blocks in United’s win over Jackson-Milton. Jenna Plummer added five kills and three blocks, while Shanna Miller had 24 assists for the Eagles (8-14). Amy Ritchie led the Bluejays with four kills and two blocks, while Sierra Huff had four kills and three blocks.
