Holy Family School began the new school year with a worthwhile cause, doing the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge to raise money in honor of former Boardman High School teacher Christine Terlesky, who has the disease.

The challenge took place on Aug. 26, the second day of school.

Holy Family School was challenged by Mandy Sinchak, one of the school’s kindergarten teachers. Several staff members participated, including teachers at both elementary and middle school levels, the speech therapist, school nurse, plant manager, secretaries and the principal.

The rules of the challenge are that within 24 hours of being challenged, participants are to video record themselves in continuous footage. They must first record themselves accepting the challenge by filling a bucket with ice and water. The bucket is then lifted up and the contents dumped on their head. The participant can then challenge someone else.

The school’s efforts helped raise more than $350 for Terlesky, added to the more than $1,000 Holy Family School raised last year.

“We love to help our local people and our local causes,” Holy Family School principal Kathleen Stoops said.

Afterwards, she and the staff challenged St. Charles School, also a Lumen Christi Catholic School, in Boardman. St. Charles accepted the challenge on Aug. 29.
