A spaghetti dinner last month raised $10,000 for a scholarship for a Youngstown State University communications student.
The dinner, to benefit the university and WKBN TV Channel 27 meteorologist Don Guthrie, who has pancreatic cancer, raised more than $17,000, said Debbie Guthrie, Don’s wife.
The Guthries have decided to donate $10,000 toward a scholarship for a communications student in honor of Don’s legacy in the Mahoning Valley, she said. They also are donating a portion of the funds to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
The Sept. 20 dinner took place at the Italian Fraternal Home in Girard.
Debbie said they appreciate how hard everyone worked.
“It was a tremendous amount of work everybody put in,” she said.
Heather Chunn, senior development officer of the Youngstown State University Foundation, said she is working with Debbie to identify criteria for the scholarship recipient. So far, all that’s known is that it will be a communications student, she said.
The first award will be givennext fall, she said.
She said that once the foundation receives the donation, it will invest the money and create the endowment.
The award will be four percent of the fair market value of the funds at the point in time the foundation does its calculation, Chunn said.
As a general example, $10,000 would generate a $400 award.
