The Austintown library hosted its monthly Lego my Library event on Sept. 3, allowing children to come and construct whatever they wanted out of Legos.

The event has been done at the library since the beginning of the year.

“It’s our monthly event for school-age kids and their siblings,” Austintown library juvenile librarian Kathe Orr said. “They come and play Legos. We put out some Lego books. We’ve had some real good attendance. They really like to come. It’s good for cooperation (among the children).”

The event attracted five children and two adults, although Orr said prior ones have gotten as many as 20 attend.

“It’s picked up. We get some Cub Scout Troops that come,” she said.

The library did display the children’s projects, but has since stopped due to the large amount of children who come to the library for after-school events.

“Kids love Legos. They like to make creations and things,” Orr said.

Orr said the children have come up with some creative things in the past, such as big towers and castles. She said they tell stories with the things they create.

Orr said doing the Lego my Library event helps teach the children about sharing.

“What’s amazing is the cooperation,” she said. “Instead of that’s mine, I want that one, they share. They share the Legos, they share the boards. They cooperate on the projects.”
