Police gunfire in Lordstown leads to investigation

Staff report

LORDSTOWN

The Lordstown Police Department was assisting three federal agencies serving a search warrant at a house on Pleasant Valley Drive when the Lordstown officer fired his weapon Wednesday afternoon.

The gunfire didn’t hit anyone, but agents with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation were called to investigate.

Neighbors reported hearing several gunshots about 1 p.m.

One man was taken into custody, said Jill DelGreco, spokeswoman for the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, which also includes BCI.

DelGreco said the U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and U.S. Department of Agriculture Office of the Inspector General were the federal agencies serving the search warrant.

The man in custody was not identified.

DelGreco said at least one shot was fired, but the exact number of shots was not available, and more details on why the shot was fired were not available, she added.

One of the federal officers was injured and taken to a local hospital, but the injury was not a result of the gunfire, DelGreco said. She said information on how he was injured was not available.

Lordstown Police Chief Brent Milhoan was at the scene throughout the afternoon, but he did not make himself available for interviews with reporters.

Pleasant Valley Drive is off Lyntz Road just southwest of the General Motors Lordstown Assembly Plant and just north of the Mahoning County line.
