The Youngstown State women’s golf team finished fourth at the Butler Fall Invitational which concluded Tuesday at the Highland Golf and Country Club. Aislynn Merling finished second after losing in a playoff to Butler’s Jenna Peters who won medalist honors with a par on the first playoff hole.
Western Kentucky won the event with a 603, Butler shot 604, IUPUI finished third at 608 and the Penguins scored 609.
Allison Mitzel earned a 10th-place finish for YSU with a two-round 150. Emily Dixon was 19th with a 158, Emily Rohanna was 30th with a 163 and Mia Barchetti carded a 166 to place 36th.
Penguin men battle weather at Cincinnati

The Youngstown State men’s golf team battled the elements on Monday, but came back strong on Tuesday during the two-round UC Bearcats Invitational. The tournament was scheduled for 54 holes, but inclement weather on Monday forced the event to be shortened. YSU finished 10th out of 14 teams, but improved 16 shots between its first and second rounds. The host Bearcats won the event with an impressive 572 while Eastern Kentucky was second and Belmont third.
Leading the way for the Penguins were Brandon Pluchinsky and D.J. Holub. Both players carded two-round totals of 151 in the tournament. Bill Gaffney rebounded from an opening round 82 with a 71 for a 153 while Steven Sveda also carded a 153 (78-75). Both golfers were tied for 46th.
Ebony Lifeline group to honor 13 at banquet
YOUNGSTOWN
The Ebony Lifeline Support Group, a self-help group for minorities, will hold its 18th annual sports banquet Oct. 24 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Social Hall, 343 Via Mt. Carmel. Thirteen new inductees will be honored after dinner, which begins at 7 p.m. The guest speaker will be Tracey Winbush of the local Tracey and Friends radio talk show.
This year’s inductees include: Darren Brown (football), Rev. Rafael Cruz (community service), Levon Hays (football), Pedro Luciano (boxing), Danny Mauzy (track), John McElroy (basketball), Ronald McElroy (basketball), Bernard McRae (basketball/baseball), Sylvia Rozenblad (softball), Ronald Smith (bsketball/softball), Randy Stephens (boxing), Sherry Stevens (bowling) and Charles Williams (softball).
This year’s recipient of the McCollough Williams Jr. Community Service Award is Bra’Kasia McClendon, a student at Youngstown Early College who plays basketball and has volunteered her time with the YMCA Leadership Group and the Bully Project. Women’s doubles event Oct. 19 at Holiday Bowl

The Youngstown-Salem 600 Baker’s Doubles Tournament will be held Oct. 19 at Holiday Bowl 1 p.m. All women must be certified members of the Youngstown-Salem USBC WBA for the 2014-15 season. At least one bowler must be a member 600 Club member.
