The League of Women Voters of Greater Youngs-town and the Mahoning Valley Historical Society, through the generosity of the Youngstown Rotary Club, will present “Rise Above the Mark,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Tyler History Center, 325 W. Federal St., followed by a discussion. Doors open at 6:30.

The film focuses on Indiana’s struggles with public- school reforms, which are similar to those experienced in schools throughout the country.

Experts Diane Ravitch, Linda Darling-Hammond, Pasi Sahlberg and others discuss how America can make positive changes to provide an exceptional public-school system for all children.

Closures planned

YOUNGSTOWN

Southbound lanes only on Market Street will be closed to traffic Monday through next Wednesday.

The closure will allow AT&T to place a crane in order to provide service to antennas at 15 Market St.

In addition to the street closure, public walkways adjacent to the crane lift will be closed in the interest of public safety.

Alzheimer’s walk

YOUNGSTOWN

The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place Saturday at the Watson Tressel Training Site at Youngstown State University, 651 Elm St. Check-in is at 8:30 a.m. and opening ceremonies begin at 9:30.

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.

A highlight of the event is recognition of the Jamieson family. Marybeth Jamieson of Struthers lost her husband, Cliff, to Alzheimer’s in May 2013, just one day short of his 58th birthday.

Jamieson, diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s in May 2008, started his career as a teacher in 1980 and was a high school football coach for more than 30 years in Girard and Struthers.

He was a 1974 graduate of Girard High School and earned his bachelor’s degree from Youngstown State University in 1980.

Center gets $5,000

YOUNGSTOWN

Easter Seals and Youngstown Hearing & Speech has received a $5,000 grant for its Community Center for the Deaf in Steubenville from the Esther Simmons Charitable Trust to be used to provide critical services to the deaf and hearing impaired.

The Steubenville CCD provides interpreting, C-Print transcription, case management, vocational support, education and advocacy services and assisted listening devices for deaf and hard of hearing individuals.
