Motto engraved on library gets lost in translation

MOORESTOWN, N.J.

The Latin motto engraved on the wall of a new library in southern New Jersey got lost in translation.

Officials had thought the phrase “Nos Secundus Coniecto Omnia” meant “We confirm all things twice.” But it actually means “We second-guess all.”

Moorestown architect Rick Ragan tells the Burlington County Times he learned of the problem from residents who translated it online.

Ragan says he’ll pay a stone cutter to change the phrase to “We encourage all.” He’ll also have the Roman numerals fixed to reflect the proper year.

Mayor Chris Chiacchio tells the newspaper a mistake is a mistake only if you do not have the courage to correct it.

Worker hid $1,200 worth of meat in pants, police say

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.

A New York supermarket employee has been accused of leaving the store with $1,200 worth of meat hidden in his pants.

State police say Gregory Rodriguez of Ossining is charged with fourth-degree grand larceny.

Rodriguez works at the A&P in Croton-on-Hudson. Police were called Sept. 29 about the theft. Rodriguez was arrested last Tuesday.

A state police spokeswoman, Trooper Melissa McMorris, says the theft occurred in one day. She did not know if it involved more than one trip to the store.

Rodriguez was arraigned last Tuesday night in Cortlandt and sent to the Westchester County Jail. The court clerk says no lawyer was present and no plea was entered.

Loose crabs in cargo hold delay New York flight

NEW YORK

If passengers on a delayed flight from New York to Charlotte, N.C., got a bit crabby, no one could really say they were being too shellfish.

Their flight left LaGuardia Airport about a half-hour late Thursday evening because some live crabs got loose in the cargo hold.

US Airways spokeswoman Liz Landau said Friday it’s unclear how the fairly small crustaceans escaped their container or what species they were.

She says there were “more than a few” of them.

It’s unknown who was shipping them. The airline carries various cargo shipments, along with passengers’ luggage.

Workers swept the crabs out of the hold, and the flight went on its way.
