No sign of arson at Flight 93 site fire

SHANKSVILLE, Pa.

Investigators say they’ve found no indication of arson or other foul play in the fire that damaged buildings at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Pennsylvania.

A National Park Service spokesman said Sunday the investigation isn’t over, and it may be weeks before officials determine the cause of the blaze that destroyed its headquarters.

The scene is now under control of park officials, who are doing what they can to salvage material left after the Friday fire.

An initial inventory indicated the losses included a flag that flew over the U.S. Capitol on Sept. 11, 2001, the day three planes were hijacked.

Flight 93’s passengers fought with the attackers before it crashed in western Pennsylvania.

The memorial and visitor center, under construction about 2 miles away, weren’t damaged.

Potential jurors return to court in Arias retrial

PHOENIX

Potential jurors for the penalty retrial of convicted murderer Jodi Arias are being called back to court as attorneys whittle down the group to an impartial panel that will determine whether the former waitress receives the death penalty or life in prison.

Roughly 175 prospective jurors remain out of an initial group of 400 who were brought in for questioning last week.

They are set to return to court Monday morning. The retrial is expected to last into December.

Arias was convicted of murder last year in the 2008 killing of her ex-boyfriend in Arizona, but jurors couldn’t agree on a sentence. Prosecutors have one more shot with the new jury to secure the death penalty, otherwise Arias faces life in prison.

Final playground in honor of Newtown victims opens

WATERTOWN, Conn.

The 26th and final playground built in memory of the Newtown school shooting victims has opened in Connecticut.

Volunteers and relatives of Dawn Hochsprung gathered in Watertown on Sunday to dedicate the playground in her honor. Hochsprung was the principal of Sandy Hook Elementary School, where she, 20 first-graders and five other educators were shot to death in December 2012.

There are now playgrounds for each of the 26 victims. They were built under the Sandy Ground Project, which constructed them in areas of Connecticut, New York and New Jersey affected by Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

Hochsprung’s daughter, Erica Smegielski, tells WFSB-TV the playground is a fitting tribute to her mother, and her grandchildren live only minutes away.

LDS women attend all-male meeting

SALT LAKE CITY

Ignoring rebukes from church leaders, members of a Mormon women’s group pushing for gender equality for the first time joined men at regional church buildings across the U.S. to watch a live broadcast of the male priesthood meeting.

According to its Facebook page, members of Ordain Women watched the session Saturday night at scattered buildings in Utah, Arizona, California, Colorado, Oregon, Texas and the Washington, D.C., area.

The meeting, which coincides with the faith’s semiannual general conference, takes place in Salt Lake City and is broadcast to regional sites around the world.

At the last two general conferences, the women marched to the meeting reserved for members of the all-male priesthood, but they were barred from entering.

The demonstrations caused a stir and led to rebukes from church leaders.
