More GM recalls
More GM recalls
DETROIT
General Motors is recalling more than 60,000 vehicles in North America, the latest round of recalls this year for the automaker.
The company outlined three new recalls Saturday, the biggest of which affects 46,873 vehicles in the U.S.
The recalls are Pontiac G8s from the 2008 through the 2009 model-years and 2011-2013 model Chevrolet Caprice PPV left-hand-drive sedans imported from Australia.
The ignition-switch key may shift from the “run” position when touched by the driver’s knee, GM said.
Another U.S. recall covers more than 10,005 Cadillac CTS-V sedans from the 2004-2007 model years and 2006-2007 model Cadillac STS-Vs.
On some vehicles, the fuel-pump module electrical terminal may overheat, causing the flange material to melt, GM said. That can lead to a fuel leak, increasing the risk of a stall and fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The automaker also issued a recall for 304 of the 2014 model-year Chevrolet Sonics in the U.S., saying the vehicles may have a loose electrical connection in the steering column that could affect the performance of the driver-side air bag.
Calif. heat wave
LOS ANGELES
Temperatures approached triple digits in much of California on Saturday afternoon and surpassed 100 degrees in inland areas as a steaming autumn in the state seemed more like an endless summer.
Heat in the low 90s was felt in the normally temperate San Francisco Bay Area, and it reached the upper 90s in the Sacramento area.
The mercury was at 95 degrees in downtown Los Angeles by midday and over 100 in the suburbs of San Bernardino County.
Hong Kong rally
HONG KONG
Bolstered by a massive rally overnight, Hong Kong’s pro-democracy activists were defiant on the eighth day of protests today in the face of attacks by opponents and government warnings to clear the business-district streets they have occupied to press their demand for reforms.
“Democracy now! Democracy in Hong Kong!” thousands chanted as speakers from the movement seeking wider political reforms for this former British colony urged them to persist in their campaign.
Obamas celebrate 22nd anniversary
WASHINGTON
President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama observed their 22nd wedding anniversary Saturday, a day late, with a celebratory dinner in Washington’s Georgetown neighborhood.
The president and his wife traveled separately Friday, prompting a delayed date night.
For their anniversary dinner, they picked Bourbon Steak at the Four Seasons Hotel, about a six-minute drive from the White House.
Search to resume
SYDNEY
After a four-month hiatus, the hunt for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 is about to resume in a desolate stretch of the Indian Ocean, with searchers lowering new equipment deep beneath the waves in a bid to finally solve one of the world’s most-perplexing aviation mysteries.
The GO Phoenix, the first of three ships that will spend up to a year hunting for the wreckage far off Australia’s west coast, is expected to arrive in the search zone today, though weather could delay its progress. Crews will use sonar, video cameras and jet-fuel sensors to scour the water for any trace of the Boeing 777, which disappeared March 8 during a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board.
