Rutgers 26, Michigan 24
PISCATAWAY, N.J.
Gary Nova threw for a career-best 404 yards and three touchdowns and Rutgers added to slumping Michigan’s woes. Nova found Andrew Turzilli on scoring passes of 80 and 14 yards and hit John Tsimis with a 7-yarder as the Scarlet Knights (5-1, 1-1) won their first Big Ten Conference game and sent Michigan (2-4, 0-1) to its third straight loss. The 2-4 start is the worst for Michigan since it opened 2-7 in 2008 under Rich Rodriguez. The setback also capped a troublesome week for coach Brady Hoke, who was under the microscope for failing to remove sophomore quarterback Shane Morris last weekend after a hit to the head. Michigan had a chance to win but a wind-aided 55-yard field goal by Matt Wile was blocked by Kemoke Turay with 3:01 to go.
Purdue 38, Illinois 27
CHAMPAIGN, ILL.
Purdue gashed Illinois for 349 yards rushing and first-time starting quarterback Austin Appleby threw for a touchdown and ran for two more to lead Purdue to an upset. Appleby was 15 of 20 for 202 yards. He ran for another 76 yards on seven carries. Akeem Hunt carried the ball 30 times for 177 yards and a touchdown. The Boilermakers (3-3, 1-1 Big Ten) took a 24-14 lead on an 80-yard touchdown pass from Appleby to Danny Anthrop in the third quarter. Big plays sank the Illini (3-3, 0-2). Besides the 80-yard touchdown, Purdue had plays of 62, 54 and 53 yards. Wes Lunt led Illinois with 332 yards and three touchdowns. But he limped off the field with help early in the fourth quarter after a big hit and did not return.
Indiana, 49, North Texas 24
BLOOMINGTON, IND.
Indiana’s Nate Sudfeld threw three touchdown passes and D’Angelo Roberts ran for two scores as the Hoosiers ran away from North Texas. Sudfeld was 23 of 29 for 230 yards. Tevin Coleman ran 17 times for 150 yards and one TD, producing his seventh straight 100-yard game and scoring in his 14th consecutive game — the longest active streaks in the Football Bowl Subdivision — to help Indiana (3-2, 0-1 Big Ten) rebound from last week’s conference-opening loss to Maryland. North Texas (2-3, 0-1 Conference USA) struggled most of the day. It trailed 21-0 after one quarter and got back into the game in the second quarter. But the Mean Green never got close after allowing two quick third-quarter touchdowns, which made it 35-7. Dajon Williams was 18 of 24 for 205 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions for North Texas. Indiana made a dramatic turnaround. The offense that sputtered a week earlier, started fast. The defense that struggled against Maryland was almost impenetrable early. Indiana even recovered a first-quarter onside kick. It was a devastating combination, and Indiana wasted no time taking control.
