GEESE CONTROL MEASURES

geese conTrol measures

Here are some methods that can be used to control the population or limit concentrations and locations of geese:

Hunting, which can be controlled, with limits as to who and how many people may hunt, or open to the public with written permission.

Bans on feeding geese with signs and brochures announcing the ban.

Visual deterrents, such as flags, balloons and scarecrows.

Pond perimeter fencing, making pond banks steep or placement of shoreline boulders or rip-rap.

Ceasing pond aeration to allow ponds to freeze in winter, thereby forcing geese to relocate.

Ceasing fertilization of grass to make it less nutritious and less attractive to geese.

Noise-makers, such as leaf blowers, electronic alarms, air horns and sirens.

Habitat modifications, such as planting tall and bitter-tasting grass along pond and lake shores.

Pyrotechnics, including screamers and bangers fired from a starter’s pistol and exploding shell crackers fired from a 12-gauge shotgun to be used only before nesting and after young geese have learned to fly.

Dogs, especially border collies, to keep geese on the run or in the water, preferably before and after nesting season.

Lasers, which are only effective at night against geese capable of flying and are not effective against nesting geese.

Chemical repellents that make grass unpalatable to geese or can be used as an aerosol to chase geese away.

Egg destruction by permit.

Roundup and euthanasia by permit.
