With two days left in the Walmart Foundation’s “Fight Hunger. Spark Change” campaign, Second Harvest Food Bank still is in second place with more than 10,400 votes. Second Harvest is on track to receive $60,000 from the campaign, which will provide $3 million in grants to participating food banks and local partner agencies associated with Feeding America, a national hunger-relief agency. People can support their local food banks by voting online at www.walmart.com/fight hunger, which ends Sunday. Mike Iberis, executive director of Second Harvest Food Bank, encourages the public to continue voting to get the food bank at No. 1. For assistance with voting, the public can call 330-792-5522.

Cyclist identified

YOUNGSTOWN

Police have identified the motorcyclist killed in an accident about 1 p.m. Wednesday as 33-year-old Leonard Pearce of the East Side.

A spokesman for the department’s Accident Investigation Unit said Pearce was traveling north down Market Street when a car pulled onto Market Street from Elva Avenue to make a left turn, and the car and motorcycle collided.

The spokesman said he did not know if charges will be filed against the driver of the car. He said an investigation is underway.

Road still closed

SALINEVILLE

State Route 39 will remain closed next week during daytime hours east of Salineville in Columbiana County for tree trimming work and vegetation management.

Crews work between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Beginning at the intersection of state routes 39 and 644, traffic will be detoured north on state Route 644 to state Route 518, east to state Route 164, south back to state Route 39, and reverse.

Beginning Oct. 14, crews will move the operation to state Route 164 between Salineville and the Jefferson County line. They expect work on state Route 164 to take two weeks.

Lane restrictions

The Ohio Department of Transportation is warning motorists that U.S. Route 224 between Interstate 680 and Tiffany Boulevard has various daily lane restrictions for resurfacing through mid-October.

ODOT says motorists should expect delays in this area.

The resurfacing is part of ODOT’s $5.4 million project to widen the U.S. Route 224 bridge over 680 and improve the 680/224 interchange. The project is scheduled to be completed by late this month.

Carving contest

BOARDMAN

Boardman Township Park will have a Pumpkin Carve-Out Contest from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, noon to 9 p.m. next Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Oct. 12.

There is a small fee for the pumpkins. Prizes will be awarded in various age categories for children and adults.

The park will have an “event-boo” in the woods from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 12. Local businesses will hand out treats along the hike and bike trail. The free event will begin near the Hofmaster Pavilion

The park also will have haunted wagon rides from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays for the next three weekends. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children. The cost for a family with two adults and up to four children is $12 for Boardman residents and $15 for nonresidents. Proceeds benefit the 4-H club of Mahoning County, 4-H alumni and PANDA.
