Lady Spartans defeated
The Boardman High School Lady Spartan’s soccer team lost to Canton Hoover High School 3-1 on Sept. 27 at Hoover High School. Freshman Cara Higgins scored a goal and senior Alison Green assisted. Senior Kristen Huck had five saves. The varsity record is 4-7-1. Boardman’s junior varsity team tied Canton Hoover 1-1. Junior Kristen Fernberg scored on a free kick.
Youth basketball registration
The Boardman Youth Basketball League is currently taking registrations for its fall/winter season. The league is for boys in grades 2-6 who are either a Boardman Local Schools student or township resident. Contact 330-774-7007 or email byb@zoominternet.net for registration information. Registration ends Oct. 17.
Boardman volleyball victory
The Boardman varsity volleyball team defeated Austintown Fitch 3-1 with scores of 25-9, 19-25, 25-22 and 25-23 on Sept. 25. Top players for Boardman included Krista Johnson (21 attempts, 14 kills), Katie Plett (37 Assists) and Courtney Plett (22 Digs). The junior varsity team defeated Austintown with scores of 25-18 and 28-26.
BHS girls soccer defeated
The Boardman High School girls soccer team was defeated by Howland 3-2 on Sept. 24 at Boardman High School’s senior night. Senior Kristen Huck had 14 saves, while freshman Cara Higgins scored a goal and senior Alexis Cailor scored on a penalty kick and had one assist. Boardman’s varsity record is 4-6-1. Boardman’s junior varsity team was also defeated by Howland with a score of 1-0. Freshman Camille Holzchuh had two saves and freshman Abby Ankrom had three saves.
BGMS volleyball plays Canfield
Boardman Glenwood Middle School’s seventh-grade volleyball team lost a tough match to a strong Canfield team 19-25, 25-23 and 12-25 to make their season record 7-4. Lauren Fetsko played an aggressive game while McKayla Bryan also contributed to the team’s strong effort on the court. The BGMS eighth-grade girls’ volleyball team lost to Canfield 23-25 and 14-25 to make their season record 5-6. Kaylin Burkey had a great serving night and Brooke Hoffman played a strong defensive game at the net.
BCMS loses to Austintown
Boardman Center Middle School’s seventh-grade volleyball team dropped a hard fought match to Austintown Middle School Blue in two games by the scores of 22-25 and 22-25.
Keimanni Boyd led the serving by scoring six points with Tyler Boggs and Sarah Queen both served five points. Marissa Malewski led the scoring in game two by scoring five points.
The season record is now 4-7.
Volleyball beats Howland
On Sept. 23, the Spartan volleyball team improved to 9-5 on the season after defeating the Howland Tigers 3-2 (25-6, 24-26, 25-12, 26-28, 15-11). Amber McMillan paced the Spartans with 18 points (six aces). Hope Landers led the offensive attack with 18 kills, while Krista Johnson added 14 of her own. Katie Platt helped the hitters out by adding in 42 assists during the match, while her sister, Courtney Platt added 28 digs.
Howland, which dropped to 7-8 on the season, was lead by Christian Carr with 28 kills, Lexi Miner 28 assists, and Cassie Marko’s 12 points.
The Spartans will travel to Austintown on the 25th to take on the Falcons.
BGMS football takes on South Catholic
The Boardman Glenwood Middle School football team dropped another close game, this time to the South Catholic Cardinals, by a score of 8-6 at the new turf field at the Boardman High School Fitness Center. Tim Bowser’s interception led to a 22-yard touchdown pass from Michael Fetsko to Che’ Trevena. However, a quarter long drive by the Cardinals to start the third quarter made the game 8-6. BGMS had a chance late in the fourth quarter to take the lead but the drive ended with an interception. In the second game, BGMS defeated South Catholic by a score of 14-0. Ryan Archey led the Spartans with scoring runs of 26- and 12-yards. Zach Ryan added a two-point conversion run in the win.
BCMS defeats Campbell
The Boardman Center Middle School seventh-grade volleyball team beat Campbell Middle School in a three game match. The scores were 25-20, 22-25 and 31-29. The Spartans record is now 4-6. Keimanni Boyd served five points in the first game win. Gia Meltz led the team in game two, serving five points. Keimanni Boyd led the scoring serving seven points, while the entire team played great defense for the game three win.
BGMS takes on Poland
The Boardman Glenwood Middle School seventh-grade volleyball team lost to Poland 19-25 and 13-25 to make their season record 7-3 on Sept. 22. Emma Ericson led the team with serves, while Sarah Varga played a strong game. The BGMS eighth-grade team beat Poland 25-13 and 25-10 to improve their season record to 5-5. Brigita Ositis and Kara Boerio were strong players.
BCMS plays P. Ross Berry
The Boardman Center Middle School eighth-grade girls’ volleyball team played P. Ross Berry on Sept. 15. Center girls swept P. Ross Berry in two games. The first game had a score of 25-9 with top servers Kenzie Widrig with eight points, Adrian Wentz with seven points and Madie Murray with three points. The second game’s score was 25-10 with top scorers of Carina Cummings (11 points), Alicia Saxton (6) and Madie Murray (4). The girls battled with Canfield on Sept. 17 at their home court. The girls played two tough games and lost in game 1 13-25, fighting for every point. Game 2’s final score was 12-25. Top scorers in game 1 were Delia Walkowiec (4 points), Alicia Saxton (3) and Adriane Wentz (3). In Game 2, the top scorer was Julia Schrembeck with 4 points, including an ace.
Boardman girls soccer defeated
The Canfield girls soccer team recently defeated Boardman at Canfield 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-23). Top players for Boardman included Amanda Lipke (eight kills), Hope Landers (six kills, 14 digs), Katie Platt (22 assists) and Courtney Platt (13 digs).
Varsity soccer has loss
The Boardman Lady Spartans varsity soccer team lost to Austintown Fitch 3-2 at Boardman on Sept. 17. Senior Alexis Downie scored the first goal of the match with 19:29 left in the first half. Senior Alison Green scored Boardman’s second goal with 2:21 left in the first half. Green and sophomore Skylar Bryant each had an assist. Senior Kristen Huck had 17 saves. Boardman’s varsity record is 4-5-1. The Boardman Lady Spartan junior varsity team defeated Austintown Falcons 4-3. Sophomore Alisa Earvin scored a hat trick and sophomore Skylar Bryant scored the winning goal with 3:56 left in the second half. Freshman Katelyn Sawyer, freshman Camille Holzschuh and junior Kristen Fernberg each had one assist. Camille Holzschuh had eight saves in the first half and Abby Ankrom had seven saves in the second half. Boardman’s junior varsity record is 5-5-0.
BGMS faces Hubbard
Boardman Glenwood Middle School’s seventh-grade volleyball team won a hard fought match against Hubbard with scores of 25-23, 20-25 and 25-23 to make them 7-2 on the season. Kennedy Page and Madi Ricciuti were leaders on the court. The BGMS eighth-grade girls’ volleyball team lost a three set match to Hubbard 25-18, 15-25 and 19-25 to make their season record 4-5. The girls adjusted well to a line up switch after losing a player due to injury. Mary Garrett performed well when asked to switch positions. Jenna Benko also stepped up and played a key role in serve receive.
BCMS falls to Canfield
The Boardman Center Middle School seventh-grade volleyball team fell to Canfield in two games by the scores of 11-25 and 11-25. Tyler Boggs scored a total of five points for the match, while Marisa Malewski also added five points.
BGMS volleyball plays West Branch
Boardman Glenwood Middle School’s seventh-grade volleyball team won an impressive match against a tough West Branch team 17-25, 25-23 and 25-22 to make their season record 6-2 on Sept. 16. Maddy Trell was a strong server helping to lead the team to victory. Julia Yauger played great defense and was aggressive at the net, while Hope Burford was a dominate blocker. The eighth-grade BGMS girls’ volleyball team lost a very intense match against West Branch 25-27, 25-19 and 24-26 to make their season record 4-4. Kailee James was on fire blocking with a total of three blocks, while Brooke Hoffman did an awesome job on the serving line with four aces.
