Sidney Crosby made his exhibition debut in Pittsburgh’s final preseason game, and Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 25 shots to lead the Penguins past the Detroit Red Wings 2-0 Wednesday night.
Blake Comeau and Oskar Sundqvist scored for Pittsburgh (3-3), and Nick Spaling had two assists. Crosby, the reigning NHL MVP, did not have a point. He has missed time in training camp because of a wrist injury and his grandmother’s death.
Jimmy Howard stopped 31 shots for Detroit (3-2-1).
Comeau scored in the second period and Sundqvist got his goal in the third.
Student who ran on field loses scholarship
COLUMBUS
A student who ran onto the field during an Ohio State football game and was body-slammed by a coach is losing his scholarship amid his court case. Defense attorney Mark Collins says officials on Tuesday started removing 21-year-old Anthony Wunder from the Evans Scholars program, which covers tuition and housing for former golf caddies.
The fourth-year engineering student is charged with misdemeanor criminal trespassing. His attorney entered a not-guilty plea in Franklin County Municipal Court.
Wunder was stopped and slammed down by an assistant strength and conditioning coach Saturday during Ohio State’s home victory over Cincinnati. The coach, Anthony Schlegel, is a former Buckeyes linebacker.
The hit has been a sensation on social media. Coach Urban Meyer said he had a somewhat serious conversation with Schlegel about the hit.
Chamberlain to appear on postage stamp
PHILADELPHIA
Wilt Chamberlain has been cut down to size. Wilt The Stilt is now Wilt The Stamp.
The Hall of Famer and the only NBA player to score 100 points in a game is set to appear on a commemorative U.S postage stamp. Chamberlain died in 1999 at age 63.
The U.S. Postal Service and the Philadelphia 76ers, with cooperation from the NBA, will formally dedicate the Wilt Chamberlain Forever stamps in a halftime ceremony at a Dec. 5 game against Oklahoma City.
The stamps are just over 2 inches tall. Kadir Nelson, of San Diego, created the two stamp image portraits of the NBA Hall of Famer.
One is based on a photograph of Chamberlain in a Philadelphia Warriors uniform; the other is based on an image of Chamberlain in a Los Angeles Lakers uniform.
The word “Wilt” is featured in either the top right or left corner of each stamp. Art director Antonio Alcala of Alexandria, Virginia, designed the stamps.
NFL extends ‘Sunday Ticket’ with DirecTV
NEW YORK
The NFL has extended its contract with satellite provider DirecTV to carry the “Sunday Ticket” package, which allows viewers to watch out-of-market games. The deal expands DirecTV’s rights to stream the package live on mobile devices and online. The agreement is worth $12 billion over eight years — $1.5 billion annually, according to a person familiar with the contract.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the figures were not made public. The previous deal was worth about $1 billion a year.
AT&T is in the process of acquiring DirecTV for $48.5 billion, making the expanded possibilities for mobile particularly attractive.
Wednesday’s announcement shows the lasting popularity of the NFL even as the league has endured weeks of turmoil over its handling of domestic violence cases. Its typically huge TV ratings have remained steady so far this season.
This was the last big renewal for the NFL’s TV packages. In 2011, the league extended its deals with CBS, Fox and NBC for nine years through the 2022 season. That increased the total revenues from those three networks from the $1.93 billion per year at the time to $3.1 billion by the end of the contracts.
