Three-year grants of $250,000 to Austintown and $375,000 to Warren under the Community Oriented Policing Services program were announced Tuesday by the U.S. attorney.

Those police departments are among seven Northeast Ohio police agencies sharing $5.1 million in COPS grants announced this week, which pay for 41 police officers.
Since 1995, the U.S. Department of Justice’s COPS program has awarded more than $14 billion nationally to pay law-enforcement officers’ salaries and benefits. Grants are awarded based on financial need, local crime rates and community policing plans.
