Nurse punched at Mahoning County jail

An inmate at the Mahoning County jail is in lockdown and will be facing additional charges after authorities said he assaulted a nurse about 9:35 a.m. Friday.

Sheriff Jerry Greene said Deron Williams, 32, punched a nurse in the face as she was dispensing medication to inmates in one of the jail’s housing pods.

The assault quickly was broken up by a corrections officer working in the pod, Greene said. The nurse received medical treatment for injuries suffered from the punch. Greene said the assault was unprovoked.

Williams is in the jail’s lockdown unit, which means he will be in his cell for 23 hours a day and when he is let out, he will be separated from other inmates.

Records show Williams has been in the jail since Sept. 28 on charges of felonious assault and domestic violence. New charges are expected to be filed, Greene said.

Greene said Williams now will be considered a high risk, which means chances are he will remain segregated for the duration of his stay in the jail.

“Probably for the remainder of his stay in our facility, he will remain in lockdown,” Greene said.
