Dad: Son critical after pregnant mom killed by van

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The father of a baby boy born by emergency C-section after his mother was fatally struck by a van in a Pittsburgh parking lot says the boy is in critical condition while doctors evaluate whether the baby may have been harmed by a lack of oxygen.

George Weatherwalk says he’s named the boy Trace Joseph Weatherwalk. He spoke to reporters about the boy’s condition on Thursday. Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC says it is not releasing information about the baby’s condition.

Pittsburgh police say the investigation into the accident is continuing and that a decision on whether to charge the driver, 88-year-old Allen Massie, will be up to the district attorney.

Police believe Massie may have accidentally hit the gas while trying to park, causing him to hit the baby’s mother, Jodie Guthrie, who died Wednesday.
