More than 30 adults and children attended the Boardman library’s Halloween Howls event on Oct. 29, with many of the children and a few adults coming dressed in costumes.
Among the costumes the children wore were Captain America, a bumblebee, a princess, a cat and a nurse.
“This is our Halloween Howls event,” Boardman library assistant supervisor of children’s works Karen Saunders said. “It’s our school-age program that we’re having tonight, but it’s more of a family program because we’ll have younger children. We’ll have Halloween stories and we’ll play games.”
During the one-hour event, Saunders read the books “The Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything,” “Thump Thump Thump” and “One Dark Night.”
Among the games that were played were ring toss with rings made from pipe cleaner with the targets being witch’s hats and pumpkins made from stuffing in brown paper bags, challenge bowling, having the children crawl around in the dark while holding flashlights and looking for candy based on trying to find the hairy toe from the story “Thump Thump Thump,” and eating cookies hanging from string without using their hands.
“You can also use doughnuts,” Saunders said. “I tried gum drops but it’s too hard to thread the needle.”
There was also the body parts game, where the children reached into brown bags and tried to guess what “body part” was inside.
“We do Halloween every year,” Saunders said. “There’s lots of fun Halloween stories that aren’t too scary for children. It’s something that’s fun to do with the kids. We had Halloween during the day for the preschoolers, but tonight we want to give the older kids a chance.”
Saunders said the children who attended would have fun and greatly benefit.
“Scared, but not too scared,” she said. “It’s just fun to play games with other kids with the Halloween theme.”
