Olde Fashioned Christmas at the Mill

When: Saturday, Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

What: Lanterman’s Mill will be festively decorated for this traditional event on the last open weekend of 2014. Enjoy fine entertainment, taste chestnuts roasted over an open fire, give Santa your wish list, watch artisans demonstrate crafts, purchase unique gifts. If you wish to share the holiday spirit with others, bring a hat, scarf or pair of mittens to decorate a “Giving Tree.” Donated items will warm up children in need this winter.

EVERGREEN WREATHS

When: Sunday, 2 to 4 p.m.

What: All materials will be provided for you to create your own evergreen holiday wreath.

Where: Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center Visitors Center, 16146 Daniel St. NE, Minerva.

Cost: Free

Fresh Boxwood Tree

When: Tuesday, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

What: Design a fresh boxwood tree for your holiday celebration table with Marie Borocz with mini red carnations, white mums, white limonium and seasonal decorations.

Where: Fellows Riverside Gardens, 123 McKinley Ave, Youngstown.

Holiday Plants

When: Next Thursday, 6 to 7:30 p.m.

What: Discover myths, legends and fun facts about many popular holiday plants, including poinsettia, mistletoe, amaryllis. Ellen Speicher will share some unique stories and tips on caring for them. Each participant will receive a poinsettia to take home.

Remembering Volney Rogers

When: Dec. 5, 7 to 8 p.m.; Dec. 6, 1 to 3 p.m.

What: First week of December was significant for Volney Rogers: He was born Dec. 1 and, 73 years later, died Dec. 3. Hike to his statue and back beneath the nearly full “Long Night Moon.”

Where: Ford Nature Center, 840 Old Furnace Road, Youngstown.

Details: Moderate difficulty, 2 miles.

Footprints in the Snow

When: Dec. 5 or 6, 10 to 11 a.m.

What: Although we may not always be able see animals, we can still see signs that they were there. Winter is a great time to see animal tracks. We will be forest detectives and be investigating animal tracks through fun activities and exploration.
