YSU makes Wolford firing official

Staff report

Youngstown State athletic director Ron Strollo made the firing of head football coach Eric Wolford official on Tuesday.

Reports began coming out Monday evening that Wolford would not return after five seasons with the Penguins. He went 31-26 at YSU, but November struggles prevented his teams from ever making the playoffs.

That, ultimately, was his downfall, according to Strollo.

“At the end of the day, the expectations here are the playoffs and I think it’s that simple,” Strollo said. “We continuously talked about it and obviously Eric understood those expectations and our kids understand those expectations.

“We just weren’t able to turn the corner.”
