1783: The British evacuate New York, their last military position in the United States during the Revolutionary War.

1864: During the Civil War, Confederate agents set a series of arsons in New York; the blazes are quickly extinguished.

1908: The first issue of The Christian Science Monitor is published.

1914: Baseball Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio is born in Martinez, Calif.

1920: Radio station WTAW of College Station, Texas, broadcasts the first play-by-play description of a football game, between Texas University and the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas. (Texas won, 7-3.)

1989: Suspects in a robbery take a taxi to jail after their getaway car wrecked and an alert taxi driver told police he’d been summoned to the scene. Patrolman Steve Dunn took the driver’s place and drove the suspects into a nearby roadblock.

Lowellville mourns the loss of John A Rozzi Jr., 24, killed at an unguarded rail crossing on McGill Street while responding to a routine volunteer fire drill. There are calls for crossing gates to be installed.

1974: When head Coach Johnny Majors’ Pitt Panthers take on Penn State at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh, he’ll have five Youngstown area players on his squad: Matt Cavanaugh and John Pelusi, Chaney; Bruce Murphy, Struthers, and John Takacs, and Glenn Hodge, Ursuline.

Robert C. Heflin, 56, of 302 Loveless SW, Warren, dies in Trumbull Memorial Hospital of injuries suffered when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver near his home.

Four people, including a Youngstown minister, are killed and eight others, including four from the Youngstown area, are injured in a two-car collision near Sulphur Springs, Texas. The dead include the Rev. Jacob McClinton, 47, pastor of the Arlington Street Church of Christ.

1964: The Parkway Towers on Park Avenue, Youngs- town’s first high-rise apartments, are sold by Frank Micchia to Mrs. Silvia Copperman and Mrs. Patricia Calautti. The new owners plan extensive renovations.

A fire at Signal-U Corp. on Railroad Street in Canfield does considerable damage to machinery and paint products before firemen from Canfield, Boardman and Austintown bring it under control.

1939: A proposal for secession of Lucas and other urban counties from Ohio to form a new state will be submitted to Toledo City C ouncil. An opinion from the state attorney general’s office says it can’t be done because counties are themselves creations of the state.

Downtown Youngstown stores respond to the first days of Christmas shopping with 1,000 temporary clerks. On the Saturday after President Roosevelt’s “early Thanksgiving,”every downtown parking spot was filled by 10 a.m.
