The Poland High School Athletic Department will be selling reserved seats for boys basketball starting on today from 8 a.m through 2 p.m to all current season ticket holders. Season tickets open to the public will begin on Monday, Dec. 1. Stop in the athletic office if you have any questions regarding season tickets.

Watson named to all-tournament team

Youngstown State senior volleyball player Shannon Watson was named to the Horizon League all-tournament team for her performance in the Penguins’ two matches at the tournament. Watson, a native of Bolivar, Ohio, averaged 3.83 kills and a block per set as the Penguins advanced to the semifinals for the second straight year. Watson posted 12 kills on a .524 attack percentage in YSU’s sweep of Cleveland State on Friday, and she had 11 kills in the loss to Oakland on Saturday. Watson had three blocks in both matches.

Watson is the second Penguin to be named to the Horizon League All-Tournament Team. Lexi Egler, the program’s other senior this season, was an all-tournament team pick in 2013.

Longtime NHL coach Pat Quinn dies at 71

VANCOUVER, British Columbia

Former NHL player, coach and executive Pat Quinn has died at age 71.

The Western Hockey League’s Vancouver Giants said Quinn died Sunday night in Vancouver after a long illness. Quinn was a co-owner of the team, which on Monday announced his death on behalf of the family.

Quinn played parts of nine seasons in the NHL and went on to enjoy a long coaching career. He coached the Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings, Vancouver Canucks and Toronto Maple Leafs.

Quinn also guided Canada to the gold medal at the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City.

Soviet hockey coach Tikhonov dies at 84

MOSCOW

The legendary Russian hockey coach Viktor Tikhonov, whose teams won three Olympic gold medals, has died after an undisclosed long illness. He was 84.

Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League said early Monday that Tikhonov died overnight. He had been receiving treatment at home for an illness that had left him unable to walk in recent weeks.

Under Tikhonov’s leadership, the Soviet “Big Red Machine” was overwhelmingly dominant, although at the 1980 Olympics it could manage only silver after the “Miracle on Ice” defeat to the United States.

Tikhonov’s Soviets won Olympic gold in 1984 and 1988, and he took the post-Soviet Unified Team to another gold at the 1992 games. He also led the Soviet team to eight world championship gold medals.

Former major league pitcher Sadecki dies

MESA, Ariz.

Ray Sadecki, who pitched in the major leagues for 18 seasons and won 20 games for the 1964 World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals, has died from complications of blood cancer, his son, Steve, said. Sadecki was 73.

Sadecki made his major league debut at age 19 with the Cardinals in 1960. In 1964, he went 20-11 and helped St. Louis win the National League pennant. The Cardinals beat the New York Yankees in the World Series in seven games.

Sadecki was traded to the San Francisco Giants in 1966 for Orlando Cepeda.

The left-hander had a 135-131 career record with a 3.78 ERA with St. Louis, San Francisco, the New York Mets, Atlanta, Kansas City and Milwaukee. Larry Kelm, ex-A&M, NFL linebacker, dies

COLLEGE STATION, Texas

Larry Kelm, a linebacker on Texas A&M’s Wrecking Crew defense who went on to play in the NFL, has died. He was 49.

The university said Monday he died this weekend in an accident while hunting. No other details were given.
