Man drowns trying to pull son, 9, from stream

SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) — Firefighters say a man drowned while trying to save his 9-year-old son from an icy stream.

Scranton Fire Superintendent Pat DeSarno says a dive team recovered Robert Kehoe Jr.’s body from Roaring Brook at Nay Aug Park around 10 p.m. Sunday.

DeSarno said Monday that two University of Scranton students jumped into the water and pulled the boy to safety while a third student stayed ashore with two other small children. The students were unable to reach Kehoe. DeSarno lauded the students as heroes. He also says a bystander stripped down and gave the students and boy his clothes to keep them warm.

Officials say the boy fell into the water around 4:30 p.m.
