Polish holiday cakes for sale

YOUNGSTOWN

Polish Youngstown is taking orders through Dec. 7 for the unique sekacz cake.

Sometimes called a tree cake, the sekacz was introduced during the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth of the late 14th century. An extra-rich pound cake, it has a conical, pine tree shape obtained from its manner of baking. The batter is systematically poured in layers onto a rotary spit in a process that takes more than 10 hours.

As it bakes, it develops spikey forms that look like branches. When it’s done, it stands vertically and is served by slicing it horizontally to reveal the “growth rings,” as in a tree trunk.

Polish Youngstown is buying the delicacies from one of only a handful of U.S. bakeries that makes them. Prices are: $15 for the 4-inch cake (1 pound); $30 for the 8-inch cake; and $60 for the 16-inch cake. Go to polishyoungstown.org.

Cakes can be picked up at 4 p.m. Dec. 7 at the Brier Hill Cultural Center, 149 Jefferson St.; and from 5:30-9:30 p.m. at Polish Happy Hour at Christopher’s Downtown, City Centre One-Lower Level, 100 E. Federal St.

Cosby canceled

NEW YORK

Foxwoods Resort Casino has indefinitely postponed Bill Cosby’s Jan. 31 concert but did not give a reason. The announcement Monday by the Connecticut resort adds to several cancellations last week for the embattled comedian amid a growing number of sexual assault allegations. At least 29 dates remain on Cosby’s touring calendar through May, including March 13 at Packard Music Hall in Warren.
