Innovative violinist in show at Monteen’s

Staff report

LIBERTY

Jerald Daemyon, who uses the violin as an instrument for R&B and jazz music, will come to Monteen’s, 3807 Belmont Ave., on Friday for a 9 p.m. show.

Tickets are $20 in advance (call 330-759-3699) or $25 at the door. Doors open at 8 p.m.

Once thought of strictly as a classical instrument, the violin has recently evolved into a lead voice in urban music, contemporary jazz and world music. This evolution has been helped forward by the innovative Daemyon, who brings technical refinement to modern improvisation.

Daemyon started his professional career at age 13 as a violinist in the International Symphony Orchestra of Windsor, Canada, the Detroit Metropolitan Orchestra and the Detroit Jazz Orchestra in a bebop jazz setting. He later trained as a classical music concert artist at Wayne State University, studying with Morris Hochberg, former first violinist in the Cleveland Orchestra. He has also studied under renowned Czechoslovakian concert violinist Peter Michalica and took master classes with concert violinist Isaac Stern.
