Autistic kids can visit with Santa

The Autism Society of the Mahoning Valley and the Southern Park and Eastwood malls will offer free Santa Claus sessions for children and young adults with special needs and their families.

This private event, before the mall normally offers Santa visits, will be an opportunity to have children’s photo taken with a trained, caring Santa in an environment set up to support the sensory, physical and other developmental needs of children with all abilities.

The sessions will be at Southern Park Mall, Boardman, on Dec. 7 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. (includes free train rides); and at Eastwood Mall, Niles, on Dec. 14 from 9 to 11 a.m.

“For one day, the malls will open up early, turn off the holiday lights and music and help kids meet Santa on their terms,” said Aundrea Cika, director, Autism Society of Ohio, Mahoning Valley.

Families are encouraged to sign up in advance and reserve a spot to limit the wait time by going to autismohio.org/mahoningvalley.

Trained elves will be on hand to play games and provide other activities while the children wait.

Parents can fill out a get-to-know-you form at the event so Santa knows what kids are thinking if they don’t want to tell him.

A variety of professional photo packages will be available for purchase.
