Man shot to death on North Side
Staff Report
YOUNGSTOWN
A man apparently was shot to death Sunday evening on the North Side.
Police were called to a home in the 700 block of Lexington Avenue about 9:45 p.m. for a report of several shots fired and a man who was in a van in the driveway but did not get out of the van.
When police arrived, they found the driver’s-side window shattered and a man inside the van dead.
Officers still were processing the crime scene in the rain about 11:30 p.m. and were not available to give more information or the man’s name.
The driver’s door of the van had at least two bullet holes in it, and a man at the scene was taken to the police station for questioning; it appeared, however, he was taken as a witness because he was not handcuffed.
A large crowd gathered on a porch next to the home out of the rain as police looked for evidence.
If the death is ruled a homicide, it would be the 18th in the city this year and fourth within a week, as well as the second within a week on the North Side.
A man was shot to death Nov. 16 at a South Side motorcycle club; another man was found shot to death Monday morning on a North Side sidewalk; and a store owner was killed in a robbery attempt Wednesday.
In 2013, Youngstown had 20 homicides. At this time last year, there were 16 homicides.
