Athletics acquire Davis from Pirates

OAKLAND, Calif.

The Oakland Athletics have filled their second key position in five days, acquiring first baseman Ike Davis and international bonus slot 86 from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for international bonus slot 27.

Oakland, which lost in the AL wild-card game to Kansas City, signed designated hitter Billy Butler to a $30 million, three-year contract Wednesday.

The 27-year-old Davis began last season with the New York Mets and batted .208 with a home run and five RBIs in 12 games before Pittsburgh acquired him April 18 for pitchers Zack Thornton and Blake Taylor.

A left-handed hitter, Davis then batted .235 in 131 games for the Pirates, finishing 2014 with a .233 overall batting average and 11 homers and 51 RBIs in 143 games. The A’s designated outfielder Andrew Brown for assignment to clear roster room.

Federer leads Swiss to Davis Cup

LILLE, France

Roger Federer has now claimed all the big prizes on offer in tennis and, for once, will be happy to share his latest trophy with others.

Federer ended a week of uncertainty about his aging back with a vintage performance to give Switzerland an emphatic victory over France and its first Davis Cup.

His 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Richard Gasquet in the first reverse singles Sunday sealed an unassailable 3-1 lead. That also proved to be the final result, with the final match between Gael Monfils and Stan Wawrinka not played.

It took 15 years for the former top-ranked Federer to achieve Davis Cup success after making his debut in the event in 1999.

Ko gets $1 million by winning finale

NAPLES, Fla.

New Zealand teenager Lydia Ko ended a big year on the LPGA Tour with the largest payoff in women’s golf.

Ko won the $1 million bonus from the “Race to CME Globe” on Sunday even before she began a three-way playoff. The 17-year-old added $500,000 when she defeated Carlota Ciganda of Spain on the fourth extra hole at Tiburon Golf Club.

Ciganda missed a 3-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole in regulation that would have given her the lead. She missed a 5-foot birdie putt on No. 18 on the third playoff hole. On her next try, she pulled her approach into a hazard and made bogey.
