An off-duty police officer who was fatally shot at a Northeast Ohio pub was honored during a public funeral at a college arena.

Investigators say 32-year-old Justin Winebrenner tried to intervene after an unruly man who’d been asked to leave the pub returned with a gun Nov. 16. Four others were injured in the shooting.

Winebrenner’s funeral Saturday at the University of Akron’s Rhodes Arena drew about 2,000 people, including police from across Ohio.

The Akron Beacon Journal reports the funeral procession from the campus to a cemetery passed the Akron Police Department, where Winebrenner worked for seven years.
