YOUNGSTOWN

“The Jewish World of Composing and the Piano Music of Judy Bruce” will be the next program in the Lishmoa v’Lilmod”: To Listen and Learn, a Shabbat Speaker Series, at Congregation Rodef Sholom, 1119 Elm St.

An abbreviated Shabbat morning service will be at 10 a.m. Dec. 6 followed by the lecture and lunch. Reservations are required a week before the event; call 330-744-5001 or send email to rodefsholom@sbcglobal.net.

Judy Bruce, a native New Yorker and now resident of New Castle, Pa., is a composer and pianist. Her orchestral piece, “Changes,” was chosen in 2011 for a public reading session by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Nanette Kaplan Solomon, pianist and professor emeritus at Slippery Rock University, has been a solo artist with the Pittsburgh Symphony. She has presented lectures/recitals worldwide.

Advent programs set

CANFIELD

The Ursuline Center is offering Advent/Christmas short retreats by Scripture scholar Sister Lisa Marie Belz, an Ursuline nun of Cleveland. She will present “What’s The Good News? Gospels of Advent & Christmas,” from 1 to 4 p.m. today at the Motherhouse. Attendees are encouraged to bring their Bibles and questions. Donation is $15.

Sister Lisa Marie also is offering a series of Advent mini-retreats. The public is invited to one or all sessions; donation is $15 for each.

Sessions, all from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., are:

Dec. 11, “Advent & Christmas with the Gospel of Luke”

Dec. 18, 6:30–8:30 p.m. “The Prolog of John’s Gospel”

Lay speaker at church

COLUMBIANA

Lay speaker Greg Bowman will speak at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Midway Mennonite Church, 13376 Columbiana-Canfield Road. His sermon will be “Gardens like in the Bible.” He is a member of the congregation and is former executive director of Goodness Grows of North Lima. The children’s message will be on sunflowers.
