Township police arrested a Youngstown woman on a robbery charge Thursday after police said she injured store employees while attempting to steal merchandise from Kmart, 1209 Boardman-Poland Road.

According to a police report, Tanicqwa Wilkerson, 23, entered the store three times Thursday and attempted to steal at least $250 worth of merchandise.

When store employees confronted her, Wilkerson reportedly shoved one employee and bit the hand of another employee.

Police arrested Wilkerson on a felony count of robbery. She is free on bond, pending an appearance Tuesday in Mahoning County Area Court.

Cab company calls police about scam

A local cab company caught a scam involving property taxes Thursday afternoon.

Austintown police said an elderly female received a call on property taxes that needed to be paid to avoid back taxes. The caller had a cab from Independent Taxi pick her up to take her to the bank and a gas station for a several-thousand-dollar transaction using Western Union.

Independent Taxi called authorities due to previous experience with a similar incident. Officials with the Mahoning County Treasurer’s office said they do not contact homeowners by phone for overdue property taxes. Instead, they use a billing reminder or a letter from the prosecutor’s office.

Va. man enters plea

A Virginia man who surrendered to police on an arrest warrant pleaded not guilty to a 2011 domestic-violence charge in Mahoning County Area Court on Thursday.

According to a police report, Sufal Khan, 30, of Springfield, Va., called his then-wife three years ago at a Mill Creek Boulevard residence and threatened to rape and kill her.

The victim reported to police at the time that her husband beat and tortured her when they lived in New York together, and she came to a relative’s house in the township to escape him.

She said he repeatedly called to threaten her when she mentioned a divorce.

Khan told police he and the victim have been divorced since 2011.

He is set to appear in court again Dec. 16.

Killed in car accident

An 18-year-old Cortland woman was killed in a one-car accident about 5:50 p.m. Thursday, a news release from the Warren Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

The patrol said Hannah O. Trumbull, 18, was driving north on Phillips Rice Road when she appeared to have driven over a patch of ice that caused her to lose control of her vehicle. The vehicle went off the left side of the road and hit two trees before stopping.

The release said Trumbull was first taken to St. Joseph Warren Hospital before being transferred to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where she died.

The release said Trumbull was wearing her seat belt. Troopers are investigating.
