Name: Sammy Snyder; Kaleigh Chretien

Instrument: Alto Saxophone; Alto, Tenor and Baritone Saxophones

Q. When did you start playing your instrument?

A. Snyder: I started playing my saxophone in the fifth-grade. The reason I chose to play the sax is because as a kindergartener I had Mr. Hvizdos (Asst. Band Director) as a music teacher, and I always looked up to him and I knew he played the saxophone. So I decided to play the sax because of him.

Chretien: I started playing the saxophone in the fifth grade. I enjoyed playing it because I liked the jazzy sound that it has.

Q. Best memory of being in band/marching band?

A. Snyder: One of my favorite memories of marching band would have to be my junior year and playing at my first Canfield Band Night and getting to know all of my friends in the band. I also enjoyed going to New Orleans where we got to march in front of thousands on the Mercedes Dome Field for the National Championship game. This was a pretty rewarding experience.

Chretien: My best memory of being in marching band was getting to march through Magic Kingdom at Disney World on New Year’s Eve day 2013.

Q. Why is music important to you?

A. Snyder: I love learning new music. I mean how cool is it to say you can read something other than words on a page. Music is unlike any other language, it is an accomplishment to say I am able to read music notes on a page. One of my favorite numbers was “Thanks for the Memories” because the band worked so hard on that drill and the music. It turned out pretty awesome.

Chretien: Music is important to me because it is kind of a way to escape and make something beautiful at the same time. My favorite songs were “Party Rock Anthem” and “Thanks for the Memories” because the drills we performed were really fun.

Q. If you were speaking to a group of students about joining the band, what would be your number 1 reason for joining the band?

A. Snyder: The social part of it. Joining band has given me the opportunity to meet some good friends that I hope to keep for a lifetime. Going through band camp as a freshman helped me before actually starting my first day of high school because I got to know more people to help me through it all.

Chretien: I would say because we all become a big family in a way. It is also really fun and something to do that can also help you in a lot of ways.

Q. What college do you hope to attend/intended major?

A. Snyder: I hope to get accepted into the NEOMED program and attend YSU to study combined sciences and fulfill my dream/goal of becoming a Pediatric General Surgeon.

Chretien: As of right now I’m planning to attend YSU with an undecided major.
