LIBERTY

Dr. Sylvia Imler, director of diversity and multicultural affairs at Youngstown State University, was keynote speaker recently at the 37th annual membership luncheon of Youngstown Section of the National Council of Negro Women Inc. at St. Mark’s Orthodox Church hall on Logan Way.

Illa Wilson entertained with music at the event with the theme, “Our Legacy, Our Leadership, and Our Future.”

A basket raffle benefited the McGuffey Centre.

In 1935, Mary McLeod Bethune founded the council, which serves as an umbrella for 39 national organizations with a membership of 4 million.

The goal of the National Council of Negro Women is to strengthen and improve the economic and social status of women and their communities.

The council participates in local programs such as Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes, McGuffey Centre’s annual Baby Shower, the Living Longer, Living Smarter workshop and donations to Protestant Family Services.

NCNW also will sponsor its sixth annual Hats Off to Seniors Luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 13 at the McGuffey Centre, 1649 Jacobs Road.

A free lunch will be served to seniors 70 and older along with bingo, door prizes and a hat parade.

Monthly meetings take place the second Saturday of each month at McGuffey Centre. For more information on NCNW visit www.ncnw.org.
