For the first time, Canfield United Methodist Church Preschool offered the public a chance to participate in its Scholastic Book Fair on Nov. 15.

The book fair offered a variety of books, including preschool level through eighth-grade level books, adult books and even cookbooks.

“We wanted to open the book fair to the public to give them a chance to support our preschool and take advantage of Scholastic’s reasonable prices and wide variety of books. We also invited the church’s congregation to shop the book fair tomorrow after church services,” said Becky Votaw, CUMC Preschool Board president.

Parents and preschool board members volunteered for the public book fair. According to Votaw, students had a chance to purchase books during their regularly-scheduled school days earlier in the week.

“Our students had a chance to shop the book fair earlier in the week and they had a lot of fun picking out their own books. Parents were also able to buy books for the school so the students can utilize them in the classroom,” Votaw said.

Votaw also said the purpose of the book fair was to encourage a love a reading in the preschool students.

“We want to instill a love of reading in our students. We also want to encourage parents to read to their children and wanted to give them an opportunity to shop for books together. We need to start young to instill a love of books in children,” Votaw said.

The money raised from the book fair will go to the preschool, which can use the proceeds to purchase a variety of items, including books, electronics, rugs and bookshelves, from Scholastic.
