As part of a series of presentations at the Boardman library on how seniors can utilize better diet and exercise to live a healthier lifestyle, Agapi Mantos spoke about the importance of whole grains on Oct. 23.

Mantos, M.S., R.D., C.S.G L.D., is a registered and licensed dietician and certified specialist in gerontological nutrition. She has been on the staff of Park Vista of Youngstown for three years and teaches nutrition at Youngstown State University.

Park Vista of Youngstown, 1216 Fifth Ave., is an assisted living facility and a rehab and skilled care center with villas and apartments.

Mantos began her hour-long presentation by having the attendees do exercised such as walking in place and leg curls.

Mantos explained that grains are divided into two subgroups – whole grains and refined grains. Examples of whole grains are oatmeal and brown rice, while examples of refined grains are white bread and white rice.

She said to make sure that at least half of your grains are whole grains.

Mantos said some of the benefits of eating grains [especially whole grains] included reducing the risk of heart disease, constipation, help with weight management and help prevent neural tube defects during fetal development during pregnancy.

When shopping, Mantos advised to look on a product’s ingredient list for the following: brown rice, buckwheat, oatmeal, rolled oats, whole-grain corn, whole oats, whole wheat and wild rice, among others.
