Water pipe bursts

YOUNGSTOWN

About 30 homes on Canfield Road were without water for about 12 hours after a 14-inch pipe burst, likely caused by the cold weather.

The pipe broke just after midnight Wednesday on nearby Idora Avenue on the city’s South Side, causing flooding on that street and no water at some homes on Canfield Road.

Those living in those Canfield Road houses are under a boil-water alert until further notice, said Eugene Leson Jr., the water department’s chief engineer.

The water was restored to those homes shortly after noon Wednesday.

Fire ruins pole barn

FOWLER

About a dozen fire departments responded to 4753 Sodom Hutchings Road to put out a pole-barn fire at 4:06 a.m. Thursday.

The barn was a total loss, but there were no injuries and no animals inside. The fire destroyed farm equipment and a utility trailer. There also was firewood inside, said Fred Yungbluth, Fowler fire chief.

No damage estimate was available. The tanker shuttle from the east side of the county assisted with the fire because there was no public water supply available at that location.
