Buffalo vs. Kent State football hit with snow

AMHERST, N.Y.

The University at Buffalo’s football game against Kent State on Wednesday night has been postponed because of a severe winter storm that continues to hit Western New York.

Officials will wait until this morning to decide whether the Mid-American Conference game can be played that day or moved to another date. Buffalo (4-6, 2-4 MAC) and Kent State (1-9, 0-6) are already out of playoff contention and each are scheduled to close the season next week.

The postponement comes during a week in which a severe lake-effect storm that dumped more about 5 feet of snow south and east of Buffalo. More snow is in the forecast through today.

NBA’s 1st openly gay player, Collins, to retire

NEW YORK

Jason Collins, the NBA’s first openly gay player, announced his retirement on Wednesday. The 35-year-old Collins played 22 games with the Brooklyn Nets last season and was not on the roster this season.

He announced his retirement in a first-person story for Sports Illustrated, saying it has “been 18 exhilarating months” since he came out as the first openly gay man in one of the four major North American professional leagues. He started his career with the New Jersey Nets in 2001 and rejoined the franchise in Brooklyn in February. He had a number of former teammates on the Brooklyn team, including former coach Jason Kidd.

Collins thanked Kidd for his support, “considering all the speculation about problems I might face within the locker room.” Collins says he’s “happy to have helped put those canards to rest.”

Scott opens with 73 at Australian Masters

MELBOURNE, Australia

Defending champion Adam Scott struggled in the blustery conditions at Metropolitan Golf Club on Thursday for a 1-over 73 in the first round of the Australian Masters.

Scott, who won the Masters the past two years at other nearby sand-belt courses — Royal Melbourne and Kingston Heath — began play on the back nine Thursday and shot 38, including a double-bogey on the 18th after his approach found a bunker. He countered that with an eagle on the par-five 6th before parring his remaining three holes.

Australians Michael Wright and Stephen Allan were the early leaders with 67s, leaving Scott at least six strokes behind. Americans Boo Weekley and Kyle Stanley were playing in the afternoon.
