70 people displaced after Mansfield apartment fire

MANSFIELD, Ohio (AP) — Nearly 70 people are looking for shelter after a fire destroyed an apartment building in north-central Ohio.

The Mansfield News Journal reports residents in a Mansfield apartment complex fled the building as the fire broke out late Wednesday morning. About 60 firefighters worked on the scene to control the flames.

Mansfield Fire Chief Steve Strickling said no residents or firefighters were injured, but the apartment building is a total loss. Officials are investigating whether a furnace caused the fire.

The Red Cross brought in city buses to take displaced residents to its local office to eat and get warm. The organization also opened an overnight shelter for the victims and will be working with the apartment owner to find residents a place to stay.
