Prostate cancer can be serious, but most men diagnosed with the disease do not die from it. Here are some facts associated with prostate cancer:

Other than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most-common cancer in American men.

Prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death in men, behind only lung cancer.

About one man in seven will be diagnosed with prostate cancer.

About one man in 36 will die of prostate cancer; the average age of death is 66.

In 2014, about 233,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed and about 29,480 men will die of the disease.

About six in 10 cases are diagnosed in men older than 65, and it is rare before 40.

More than 2.5 million men in the United States diagnosed with prostate cancer are still alive.
