OSU Toys for Tots event set for Nov. 29

Kennsington Golf Club will host its second Toys for Tots Ohio State-Michigan tailgate party.Every toy donation will receive a certificate for free nine holes of golf and cart to use for next year. The event will include: local Toys for Tots marine representatives, a large heated tent, jumbotron screen, a Chinese auction, a 50-50 raffle and a buffet for $19.99 per person. The Labra Brothers will perform at night.

Phantoms wear socks to support charity

The Youngstown Phantoms wore red-and-white striped socks in support of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Mahoning Valley and Western Pennsylvania against the Lincoln Stars on Nov. 16. Fans showed their support by purchasing socks for $5 and 100 pairs of socks were purchased.

Western Reserve playoff tickets will be on sale at the high school, middle school office and elementary office Thursday and Friday from 7:30 a.m until 3:30 p.m. Tickets will be sold in the athletic office on Wednesday night from 4-7 p.m, Thursday night 5-8 p.m and Friday night from 4-6 p.m. The Blue Devils face the Norwalk St. Paul Flyers on Saturday at Copley high school.

Italiano earns MAC player of the week

Kent State junior safety Jordan Italiano (Canfield) recorded a career-high 16 tackles, intercepted a pass and forced a fumble in a 30-20 loss at Bowling Green to earn the defensive player of the week in the Mid-American Conference’s East Division. Italiano’s 16 tackles, included nine solo stops and one tackle for loss.

YSU men’s basketball adds forward Haygood

Forward Devin Haygood (Ypsilanti, Mich.) has a signed national letter of intent during the early signing period to continue his academic and athletic career at Youngstown State. Haygood joins Jordan Andrews (Reserve, La.), a 6-foot-5 shooting guard from Riverside Academy, and Latin Davis (Ypsilanti, Mich.), a 5-foot-11 point guard from Milan High School, in the 2015-16 recruiting class. Haygood was an all-conference selection last season after averaging 15 points and seven rebounds per game.

UConn women stunned by No. 6 Stanford

STANFORD, Calif.

Amber Orrange made a go-ahead jumper with 1:38 left in overtime and the tying 3-pointer with 1.4 seconds remaining in regulation, sending No. 6 Stanford to an 88-86 victory against top-ranked Connecticut to snap the Huskies’ 47-game winning streak.

The Cardinal ended another long Huskies’ run nearly four years after snapping the program’s NCAA record 90-game unbeaten run. UConn went 40-0 last season on the way to its second straight championship. UConn lost for the first time since falling to Notre Dame in the 2013 conference tournament.

Lili Thompson scored 24 points and Orrange 17 for Stanford (2-0).

Breanna Stewart scored 23 points and converted two free throws with 37.4 seconds left in regulation and Saniya Chong had 20 for the Huskies (1-1).

Blue Jays to sign C Russell Martin

TORONTO

A person with knowledge of the deal says the Toronto Blue Jays and free agent catcher Russell Martin have agreed to a five-year, $82 million contract.

Martin took a physical Monday and the Blue Jays are expected to finalize the deal Tuesday, according to the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal was not yet complete.

A three-time All-Star, Martin hit .290 with 11 home runs and 67 RBIs last season, while also helping the Pirates to a second straight playoff berth.

The 31-year-old Martin, who grew up in Montreal, turned down a $15.3 million qualifying offer from the Pirates last Monday.
